#GE13: Paint Selangor blue, young voters urged

Paint Selangor blue, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak told young voters as he encouraged them to spread Barisan Nasional's influence across the state.

“Our mission is to win. We must win. We will colour the whole of Selangor blue,” he said, referring to the primary colour of Barisan.

Najib, who is Barisan chief, was addressing a youth gathering organised by the Selangor Barisan Youth and Kelab Putera 1Malaysia at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Polytechnic here yesterday.

The young crowd responded with applause and shouts of Tukar (change) as Najib touched on the transformation plans for Selangor when the Barisan takes back the state government from the current administration.

“The Opposition has failed. They have failed to fulfil their promises, they have failed to govern Selangor. We will change the state government.

“Their manifesto is a manifesto of fantasy and delusion, because the Mentri Besar (Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim) has said a manifesto is not a promise,” he said.

PM Najib launches Military Community Volunteering Day at 32 camps nationwide

A total of 32 armed forces installations opened their doors for public viewing for the first time on Saturday as part of the Blue Ocean strategy.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the pioneer initiative was to foster a closer rapport between the security forces comprising army, navy and air forces with the people.

"Peace and security is the most important element for a country's success.

"Malaysia will not be where she is today without the willingness of a group of citizens to put their lives on the line.

"At the same time, other citizens must give their full support and appreciate their sacrifices," he said in a speech at the Kuantan air force base here when launching the Military Community Volunteering Day.

Also present were Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and armed forces chief Jen Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin.

George Town flooding 'worst in five years'

The flash flooding in George Town is the worst in five years, according to Datuk Keramat state assemblyman Jagdeep Singh Deo.

"In just three hours, the rainfall has measured up to 168mm, approximately half the monthly figure," Jagdeep told a press conference at his service centre in Jalan Datuk Keramat.

He added that Sungai Pinang was the worst hit area.

Penang state exco Phee Boon Poh said that he will distribute 2,500 packets of food to the affected residents.

"The flash flood is clearly due to the heavy downpour as the heavily affected areas like Jalan P. Ramlee and Sungai Pinang were submerged in water and no rubbish was sighted."

Sungai Pinang exceeded its danger level of 2.7m, now measuring at 3.19m.

He added that there was no flood in Butterworth.

This is our first assignment as the caretaker government and a team of us are on the ground to reach out to the people," said Phee, who is the Penang Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environmental Committee chairman.

Saya sebagai bekas perajurit yang menerima kecacatan kekal kerana bertempur dengan pengganas komunis pada 19 Mac 1970 merasa amat kesal dan patah hati apabila membaca akhbar Utusan Malaysia bertarikh 22 Mac 2013.

Timbalan Menteri Pertahanan, Datuk Dr. Abd. Latiff menyatakan ada bekas-bekas jeneral bergabung dengan parti pembangkang berceramah memperlekehkan keupayaan para tentera kita.

Perkara ini amat memalukan dan juga mencerminkan betapa rendahnya nilai perjuangan mereka. Saya menganggap mereka itu seperti prebet yang telah diturunkan pangkat. Kalau dinilai daripada semangat perjuangan, bukan begitu cara mereka menaikkan semangat para pejuang kita.

Amat memalukan, semasa dalam perkhidmatan, bekas-bekas jeneral ini pandai memerintah sahaja. Merekalah yang dapat pangkat dan bintang.

Bagi saya kalau ada kuasa atau akta, lucut sahaja bintang-bintang dan gelaran yang diberi kepada mereka. Kalau boleh potong pencen bulanan mereka kerana menentang kerajaan. Jangan fikir mereka 'besar' dan boleh buat apa yang mereka suka.

GE13: BN to launch manifesto tomorrow

Barisan Nasional will spell out its new commitments to the country in its manifesto which will be launched tomorrow.

Unlike past elections, this time it will also release its candidates list earlier to give voters time to familiarise themselves with the candidates.

Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the early manifesto launch was to allow the people to have a better understanding of it.

“The manifesto is our akujanji (pledge) to the people of Malaysia.

“With a fresh mandate, we will undertake renewal and changes in line with our objective, which is to further develop the economy and improve the wellbeing of the people,” he said.

He said candidates would be named early to give them time to prepare.

“If we announce the names earlier, we will have more time to allow our candidates to introduce themselves.

“We will also get more time to observe the reaction towards our candidates and settle whatever problems that may arise,” said Najib, who earlier chaired back-to-back meetings.

PM says Cyberjaya progress may be scuttled by water woes

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Cyberjaya risks not achieving its real potential as a world class ICT hub if water woes in Selangor are not resolved soon.

He said Cyberjaya could face acute water shortage due to Selangor government's refusal to the expansion programme of the Langat 2 water treatment plant.

"Infrastructure is in place to supply sufficient water for the people in Selangor and Federal territory but the state is not cooperating.

"We now have the opportunity to ensure continuous progress of Cyberjaya and the state," he said at the ground breaking ceremony of the Cyberjaya mosque here Friday.

#LahadDatu: Extra layer of security for Esszone

A panel led by the Prime Minister will be monitoring a committee tasked to manage the Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (Esszone), Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail has said.

He said the panel reflected the Government’s concern that the Esszone covering 10 Sabah districts was managed at an optimum level.

“The panel will from time to time review Esszone committee’s performance and give directions when necessary,” Gani said during a media briefing yesterday about a conference on the safety zone to be held today.

The conference with the theme “Sabah Security and the Esszone” will be launched by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman here and will be attended by some 400 people including civil servants, local community leaders and NGO representatives.

Gani said the conference was aimed at explaining the intricacies of the Esszone to the various interested groups and the public in Sabah.

Gani said Esszone’s legal framework, established in the wake of the Sulu gunmen’s intrusion in Lahad Datu two months ago, was based on the Preservation of Public Order Ordinance 1962.

The state law that was federalised when Sabah became part of Malaysia in 1963 provided for the setting up of a safety zone with a proclamation by the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.

#GE13: It's on

The 13th General Election is on. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak confirmed that Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah had consented to the dissolution of the 12th parliament.

"I met the Agong this morning and he consented to the dissolution of Parliament," Najib said during a live televised speech after the Cabinet meeting here Wednesday.

He advised all the state governments, except Negri Sembilan and Sarawak, to also dissolve their respective state legislative assemblies to allow the state elections to be held simultaneously with the general election.

The Negri Sembilan state legislative assembly dissolved automatically on March 28.

Sarawak held its state election on April 16, 2011, and the Barisan Nasional (BN) was returned to power after it won 55 of the 71 seats contested.

Following the dissolution of the Dewan Rakyat today, the Election Commission (EC) is expected to meet soon to set the dates for nomination and polling.

The current mandate of the government was due to expire on April 28 this year.

Foreign worker killed in worksite crash

A foreign worker was killed in another crane crash - three days after a motorist was killed by falling construction equipment at the LRT project site.

The latest victim, in his 30s, and another foreigner were on a sky lift, repairing the zinc roofing on a four-storey flat in Kampung Keramat yesterday.

According to witnesses, the arm of the crane arm was fully extended and had two men in the basket when it lost balance and toppled over.

This caused the basket to come crashing down between the flat and a row of single-storey homes behind it.

Fire engines from the Setapak and Kampung Keramat stations rushed to the scene after receiving a call at noon.

The building had minimal damage but the impact of the crash broke the crane's arm and basket, killing the Indonesian worker instantly and injuring his colleague.

Another worker, who was on the roof, escaped unharmed and was later rescued.

Mobile cataract clinic launched

The Health Ministry has launched the 1Malaysia Cata­ract Clinic (KK1M) for the east zone of Peninsular Malaysia.

It is a mobile clinic that will travel to Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

“It will be stationed in each lo-ca­tion in the states for two weeks.”

At the launch of the clinic yesterday, Liow said cataract was the main cause of blindness as well as sight problems at a rate of 39% in Malaysia.

“It is estimated that 300,000 Malaysians suffer from cataract.”

However, he said only 28,500 patients had cataract surgery in 2010.

He said there was poor coverage of ophthalmology services especially in rural areas as well as a lack of awareness of eye diseases and treatments available.

#LahadDatu: Eight more suspects charged over intrusion

Eight more people have been charged in connection with the Lahad Datu intrusion, bringing the total number of people charged to 16.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said the suspects were charged yesterday under Section 130 KA of the Penal Code for terrorism read with the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

“They will be brought to the High Court for a hearing tomorrow,” he said at the daily Ops Daulat media briefing in Felda Sahabat.

He said police believed only about 10 gunmen were left within the Kampung Sungai Bilis, Kampung Lok Sembuang and Kampung Lok Buani areas.

“We are not ruling out the possibility that they have started posing as villagers but the authorities have their own ways to detect them and will arrest them soon,” Datuk Hamza said.

He also assured villagers, who were recently allowed to return to their villages, of their safety as security officials were still present around the villages and other areas in Lahad Datu for security purposes.

“Our personnel are still on standby so there is no need to worry,” Datuk Hamza added.

#LahadDatu: Three Immigration complexes begin operating

Three immigration, customs, quarantine and security centres (CIQs) began operating in Kudat, Pulau Banggi and Lahad Datu on Tuesday as the first step in closing down the more than 35 illegal entry points along Sabah's east coast.

Immigration Department director general Datuk Alias Ahmad said the three new CIQs were among the first initiatives under the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) that was set up in the wake of the Sulu gunmen intrusion in Lahad Datu in February.

"These news CIQs would mean a better regularisation of foreigners into Sabah," he said, adding that the department had formally notified the Philippines government of the new entry points via Wisma Putra.

The new CIQs would be in addition to the existing facilities at Sandakan, Tawau and Semporna.

He said authorities had detected more than 35 illegal entry points in Sabah's east coast and about 25 of these were in the east coast Sandakan district alone.

DOSH to meet contractors over safety

The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) will be meeting with contractors to tighten their safety management system after a freak accident at an LRT construction site killed a motorist.

Its director-general Datuk Dr Johari Basri said the meeting, which was called in light of development executive A. Vijayasingam's death after a 10-tonne construction equipment fell on his car, would focus on managing sub-contractors and specialised equipment such as cranes.

“It will also discuss the need to increase safety personnel and better traffic management.

NS camps in security zone area remain closed. #LahadDatu

Two National Service (NS) camps in Sabah which were closed due to the attacks by foreign militants will only re-open once the security situation there returns to normal, says NS Department director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil.

He said that the Bagai Budi camp in Sandakan and the Shan Shui camp in Tawau, which are located in the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) area, had been closed until further notice.

“We will consider re-opening the camps for training when the situation in eastern Sabah is stable,” he said after seeing off 450 NS trainees in Ayer Keroh here yesterday.

Abdul Hadi said that the two camps had been temporarily closed after parents raised concerns over their children's safety after news of the Lahad Datu incursion broke out.

He said 142 trainees originally slated to train at the two camps had been transferred to five camps in Selangor and Malacca.

“Another 846 trainees from Sabah will only undergo training at a later date, while 516 trainees, located in the Esscom area, are unaffected,” he added.

Rise in household income tied to govt transformation programmes

The current average monthly household income of Malaysians at about RM5,000 compared to RM4,025 in 2009, is among the initial outcomes of the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).

Political analysts said the GTP and ETP were not just mere slogans because the implementation report data had proven the programmes' success in raising the household income of Malaysians.

According to the 2012 GTP and ETP achievement report, the two initiatives have started to show significant improvements in the well-being of the people.

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Social Science Faculty senior lecturer Dr Jeniri Amir said the Government's move in enhancing the GTP and ETP programmes was a timely step for the country towards achieving developed nation and high-income status.

“Compared to five years ago, the increase is very significant, whereby civil servants' salaries have been raised and we also have a minimum salary for the private sector,” he said.

Dr Jeniri said Malaysia recorded a growth rate of 5.6% despite uncertainties in the global economy.

Strong economic growth continues to generate job opportunities and drive various economic activities, he added.

Datuk Seri Muhammad Ridzwan Sulaiman surrendered himself Monday at Ampang Jaya police station in connection with Lahad Datu's intrusion.

On Sunday, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said they were looking to contact one Muhammad Ridzwan from George Town in connection with their investigations into the intrusion.

Speaking at the daily press briefing at Felda Sahabat Residence, Hamza said Muhammad Ridzwan, who is in his 50s, is believed to be the president of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Al-Ehsan Islamiah Malaysia.
