Government ready to help build houses for estate workers

Federal Government is ready to finance the construction of houses for estate workers if the owners are willing to allocate the land.

Human Resources Minister and MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said there were about 52 estates that have more than 405 hectares in the country and the Government had arranged with Bank Simpanan Nasional to obtain maximum housing loans of RM60,000 for estate workers nearing retirement to buy houses.

He said the dependency on foreign labour would decrease if houses were built in the estates as more children of the employees would prefer to work in the estates as it was more convenient.

> Tamil Nesan reported that Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa had called off the 20th Asian Athletics Championships scheduled to be held in Chennai in July.

She said her government had written to the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) in Singapore seeking to bar the Sri Lankan team from participating in the games.

She cited the sentiments of the people in Tamil Nadu as the Sri Lankan government was repeatedly acting against ethnic minorities in Sri Lanka.

Rebuild altar in house - MIC

MIC will rebuild the Hindu altar which was demolished by the Sepang Municipal council in a case that has angered Indians nationwide.

MIC Youth chief T. Mohan said work to rebuild the altar would start tomorrow morning and would be done by a contractor and an altar-maker who would be paid by the party.

“We will keep on rebuilding the altar, no matter how many times they demolish it. We want to see how many times they tear it down after this,” Mohan told The Star.

On Nov 20, the Sepang Municipal Council demolished the altar within the compound of a house in Taman Seroja, Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi.

House owner Umah Devi said she received a notice from the council to demolish it on grounds that the structure violated council by-laws.

A second letter warned that she could be fined RM250 per day if she did not tear it down.

Last Friday, hundreds of disgruntled people demonstrated in front of the Selangor State Secretariat building to demand a public apology from the state government over the demolition of the altar.

Mohan criticised Selangor state executive councillor Dr Xavier Jayakumar for initially defending the council by saying that it had the right to tear down structures constructed without approval.
