Israel presses on with Gaza offensive, Palestinians fire rockets

GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel pressed on for a fourth day on Friday with its Gaza offensive, striking the Hamas-dominated enclave from air and sea, as Palestinian militants kept up rocket attacks deep into the Jewish state.

At least 82 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed in the offensive, which Israel says it launched to end persistent rocket attacks on its civilian population, some of which have reached Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and other cities.

Israeli leaders have appeared to hint at a possible invasion by ground forces and some 20,000 army reservists have been mobilised, giving them the means, if they choose, to mount a land offensive.

Gaza medical officials said four people were killed in Israeli pre-dawn attacks. The Israeli military said fresh naval and air strikes were launched early, but a spokeswoman gave no further details.

An air strike on a house in Gaza City killed a man described by officials as a doctor and pharmacist. Medics and residents said an Israeli aircraft bombed a three-storey house in the southern town of Rafah, killing three people.

The Palestinians said Israeli tanks fired shells east of Rafah, naval forces sent shells into a security compound in Gaza City and aircraft bombed positions near the borders with Egypt and Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised statement on Thursday: "So far the battle is progressing as planned, but we can expect further stages in future. Up to now, we have hit Hamas and the terror organisations hard and as the battle continues we will increase strikes at them."

Netanyahu discussed options with his security cabinet as new air strikes were launched and officials hinted at a ground offensive. There was no word on when or if this might happen.

The last time they undertook such an offensive was in early 2009. Ground troops did not cross into the Strip, one of the world's most densely populated territories, during the last major exchange of rockets and missiles in October 2012.

"We have long days of fighting ahead of us," Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon said.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri sounded a defiant note, when asked about Yaalon's remarks. "Our backs are to the wall and we have nothing to lose," he said. "We are ready to battle until the end."

The Israeli military said more than 470 projectiles have been fired at Israel since Tuesday by Islamist Hamas, the dominant force in Gaza, and by other militant groups.

The salvoes have caused no fatalities or serious injuries, due in part to interception by Israel's partly-U.S. funded Iron Dome aerial defence system.

Some rockets have landed more than 100 km (60 miles) from Gaza. Sirens sounded as far north as the Israeli city of Haifa on Friday, though police said no remnants of rockets, which Hamas said it had fired, were found.

CHILDREN AMONG THE DEAD

Medical officials in Gaza said at least 60 civilians, including a four-year-old girl and a boy of five killed on Thursday, were among the 82 Palestinians who have died since the offensive began on Tuesday.

U.S. President Barack Obama told Netanyahu by telephone on Thursday that the United States was willing to help negotiate a ceasefire, the White House said.

French President Francois Hollande voiced his concern at the civilian deaths and called for a truce. A spokeswoman for U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who like Hollande spoke to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said: "Nobody wants to see a ground invasion."

Kerry spoke to his Egyptian counterpart in an attempt to get Egypt to use its influence to calm the situation, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. Kerry, she said, had also "reached out" to Qatar.

Cairo brokered a truce in the 2012 conflict, but the current military government's hostility towards Hamas could make mediation more difficult.

The Israeli offensive followed a build-up in violence after three Israeli students were killed in the occupied West Bank last month and a Palestinian youth was killed in a suspected revenge attack in Jerusalem.

Israel says it has struck more than 860 targets in Gaza. Palestinian rocket fire escalated after Israeli forces arrested hundreds of Hamas activists in the West Bank while searching for the youths, whom Israel said were abducted and killed by Hamas.

Israel's targets have included militant commanders' homes, which it described as command and control centres. Palestinian officials put the number of dwellings destroyed or damaged at more than 120. Residents said some of the houses did not belong to fighters.

Owners of some of the targeted homes received telephoned warnings from Israel to get out. In other cases, so-called "knock-on-the-door" missiles, which do not carry explosive warheads, were first fired as a signal to evacuate. Scenes of families fleeing their homes have played out daily.

Residents said in Friday's attack in Rafah no warning was issued and the victims were asleep when their house was bombed.

U.S.-backed Abbas, who is based in the West Bank and entered a power-sharing deal with Hamas in April after years of feuding, has denounced the Israeli offensive.

Why U.S., Israel should welcome Palestinian move at U.N.

Israel's security can only be assured when its neighbors believe that it is no longer oppressing the Palestinian people but instead living in peace and harmony with them.

The de facto strategy of past and present Israeli governments of seeking security through domination and by pushing Palestinians out of their homes, or allowing right-wing religious fanatics to create settlements throughout the West Bank to ensure that no Palestinian state could have contiguous parts, has not and cannot work to provide safety for Israel.

Israel's fate and its well-being are intrinsically linked to the well-being of the Palestinian people. It's time for the powerful to show generosity to the relatively powerless.

So those in the U.S. and Israel who want Israel to be secure should welcome the Palestinian Authority's decision to seek observer status as a nonmember state in the United Nations. The authority has agreed to return to negotiations with Israel without conditions once that status has been granted. The goal is creation of a state living in peace with Israel in borders roughly approximating those of the before than 1967 war, with minor border changes mutually agreeable through negotiations.

TENTERA SINGAPURA DIBANGUNKAN SAMA SEPERTI TENTERA ISRAEL

Gaza: What is Israel's military strategy?

Source : BBC News

On Friday, the cabinet authorised the call-up of up to 75,000 reservists, although so far only about 20,000 have been contacted.

So what is Israel's military strategy?

Its offensive, which is being called Operation Pillar of Defence, began on Wednesday when the head of the Hamas armed wing, Ahmed Jabari, was killed in his car in Gaza City.

Since then, the assault against Gaza has been conducted through a remote campaign of air strikes, naval artillery and tank fire across the border.

More than 1,100 targets have been hit. The Israel Defense Forces say their objective is to stop rocket fire by militant groups in Gaza into Israeli towns and cities.

Minister urges Muslims to hold prayers for lasting peace in Gaza

Muslims in the country have been advised to hold prayers for the people of Gaza to live in peace.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said prayers would help “make a difference”.

“Some people may think that nothing can come from prayers compared with other forms of assistance, but as Muslims, we have to pray to achieve all objectives,” he said.

The minister called on mosques and surau throughout the country to hold prayers for the safety of the Palestinians.

He said mosques under the jurisdiction of the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia, such as Masjid Negara, Masjid Putra, Masjid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and the Federal Territory Mosque, and other mosques in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, should conduct prayers.

These mosques are scheduled to have special sermons on the issue of Palestine today.

Jamil Khir said in the context of seeking to protect the Palestinians, Malaysia was on the right track in using every available avenue to assist them.

He said efforts to help should continue with the support of the international community.

Israel told to remove blockade so that Palestinians can enjoy their right to life

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has appealed for the ceasefire in Gaza to hold out, saying a long-term solution should be worked out.

The Prime Minister asked Israel to remove its blockade on Gaza “so that Palestinians can enjoy their right to life”.

“It is with great relief that we awoke to news of a ceasefire in Gaza (yesterday). I call upon both sides to stand true to the ceasefire agreement and ensure no further destruction of property and loss of life,'' he said at a dinner in conjunction with the International Conference on War-Affected Children here last night.

The conference, held at the Putra World Trade Centre earlier in the day, featured local and international speakers highlighting the effects of war on children.

Najib said the focus should be on a broader Middle East peace process, saying the region should move from conflict to stability.

“No child should lose his or her home, family or life. It is incumbent on us, the governing generation, to make the changes that children deserve,''he said.

Gaza violence to be the key talking point

The latest spate of atrocities suffered by Palestinians at the hands of Israel is expected to be a key talking point at the Umno general assembly next week, party vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said.

He said the topic was unavoidable as the pursuit of global peace had much to do with the economy, education and religion.

“This is something that is close to our hearts and championed by the party for a long time,” he said after launching the 1KDN Semarakkan Kedamaian programme here.

Hishammuddin, who chairs the assembly's Motions and Speakers committee, said with Internet access these days, the stand taken by Umno members in pushing for justice would be known around the world.

“We don't want to see hate politics and the spread of allegations, which have become a norm in today's political landscape.

“We want to differentiate ourselves from that... no matter how small, if we are sincere, honest and united, our voices will be heard,” he said.

Hamas says 'Israel failed in its goals'

CAIRO: Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal said on Wednesday that Israel had “failed in all its goals” after a Gaza truce deal came into effect, while thanking Egypt’s President Morsi for his support.

“After eight days, God stayed their hand from the people of Gaza, and they  were compelled to submit to the conditions of the resistance,” Meshaal said.

“Israel has failed in all its goals,” he told reporters in a Cairo hotel.

Meshaal also thanked ceasefire mediator Egypt, as well as Iran, which he  said “had a role in arming” his Islamist movement.

“I would like to thank our dear Egypt, aided by the brave elected President  Mohamed Morsi... Egypt acted responsibly and understood the demands of the  resistance and the Palestinian people,” he said.

Meshaal also praised Iran, despite “disagreements on the situation in  Syria”.

The truce accord, a copy of which was obtained by AFP, calls on Israel to “stop all hostilities... in the land, sea and air including incursions and  targeting of individuals”.

It also urges the Palestinian factions to end “rocket attacks and all  attacks along the border”.

Intense but fruitful Asean summit

Israel's aggression against Gaza and territorial disputes hog the headlines but much of Asean's agenda was achieved in the three long days of meetings.

AS he got up after his press conference with the Malaysian media before departing home from Phnom Penh, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak candidly exclaimed: “Wah! Exhausted! If anyone thinks that this is a joy ride, you better tell the people at home.

“Pagi sampai malam tiga hari berturut turut, tak berhenti langsung! (From morning to night for three days in a row. Non-stop)”. He quipped, still looking dapper despite going through another long day of meetings with Asean and world leaders, including from China, India, the United States and Japan.

Asean summits have always had a punishing schedule for those participating in the meetings. Meetings always overrun the scheduled time, causing a pyramid effect on other meetings.

But as a seasoned Asean summit attendee from Malaysia puts it, “Asean meetings will always be important as the cornerstone of a country's foreign policy”.

Asean meetings can be slow affairs but can get fairly “exciting” when there is a crisis brewing be it political or foreign affairs.

US president to play role for ceasefire in Gaza conflict

US President Barack Obama has responded to a call by Malaysia and Indonesia asking for his country to get Israel to stop its military aggression in the Gaza Strip.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Malaysia had called for a resolution not only for the short-term but in the long run to end the conflict.

“Obama said he would try and that he wanted the current violence to stop. But to get a comprehensive and final solution would be a huge undertaking.

“He knows the challenges and complexities of the problem.

“This is a very complex and almost insurmountable (problem),” Najib told the Malaysian media after attending the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) meeting, which was also attended by Obama yesterday.

Officials said Malaysia and Indonesia had spoken up about the need for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during the Asean-US Summit on Monday.

For evil to triumph, powerful countries need do nothing

THE hideously spiralling, lopsided violence in Gaza is a tragedy of vast proportions and a travesty of international politics.

Israel, as a full member of the United Nations, is hell-bent on punishing the Palestinian people again by exterminating residents of Gaza along with its Hamas leadership.

For more than a week now, Israeli forces have bombarded Gaza more viciously than any independent terrorist group, deliberately targeting homes and other civilian centres after murdering a Palestinian Hamas leader.

More than 100 Palestinians have been killed and over 700 wounded, in “response” to what Israel says are Hamas rocket attacks that killed three Israelis.

This has come after years of a siege that Israel forced on Gaza, compelling residents to turn to Hamas.

Israel has made a mockery of claims to a Palestinian state, and yet the United Nations and particularly the UN Security Council can only stand by.

MPs from both sides condemn Israeli attacks

KUALA LUMPUR: MPs from both sides of the political divide spoke with one voice to condemn the latest Israeli attack against the people of Palestine.

At the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, they unanimously approved an emergency motion moved by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to decry the military attacks.

The resolutions stated in the motion will be sent to all relevant legislative assemblies especially the US Congress, the British Parliament, the European Union Parliament, the UN secretary-general and the president of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

It also sought to urge the Security Council to compel Israel to immediately cease its military attacks on Gaza and deploy a peacekeeping force there.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz tabled the motion on Najib's behalf.

To a suggestion from Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar (PASTumpat) to sever all ties with Israel, Nazri said this was impossible as Malaysia practised free trade dealings.

“Malaysia has never had import and export ties with Israel. Malaysia is a nation that practises free trade so we cannot control international trade, including the destination of our products,” he said when winding up the debate on the emergency motion.

NGOs back motion to end Gaza atrocities

The tabling of a motion condemning Israel's atrocities in Gaza has received the thumbs up from non-governmental organisations.

Country Director for Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM) Zairul Shahfuddin Zainal Abidin said the motion was an appropriate action taken by the government to express its concern about the plight of the innocent civilians in Palestine.

"The voices of free countries like Malaysia need to be heard to let the Israelis know that the world is watching and people are aware of the outrageous crime they are committing."

Zairul Shahfuddin said that besides the tabling of the motion, Malaysia would also be lobbying the United Nations to hasten relief efforts in Gaza.

"I am glad that we are doing our part to help the Palestinians."

He said IRM was also making efforts to assist the Palestinians in terms of medical support, adding that IRM was targeting to raise RM5 million which would be distributed to nearly 30 hospitals in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Aqsa Syarif chairman Dr Hafidzi M Nor said the tabling of the motion was laudable.

"As a democratic country, we need to show our concern to ensure that the United Nation stands up to help the Palestinians."

Dalu Family In Gaza Mourns Dead After Israel Bombs House

Even as neighbours picked through the rubble of their destroyed house for survivors, the stunned Dalu family arrived at Gaza's main hospital on Monday to collect the bodies of nine relatives for burial.

"Is this your wife?" asked a medic inside the morgue.

"Ahh, what happened to your face sweetheart?" her husband said, weeping and collapsing into the arms of his spouse. The woman's face was burnt beyond recognition.

Israel's bombing of the Dalu house in Gaza on Sunday was the deadliest single attack since it began an offensive it said was aimed at deterring Hamas and other militant groups from firing rockets over the border at its towns and villages.

Nine members of the Dalu family, a mother and her four children, a grandmother, great grandmother and two aunts died in the Gaza strike. Two other neighbours were also killed as the building collapsed.

Israel’s action could lead to more terrorist acts

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein warned that heavy military action by Israel against Gaza could bring about a rise in militancy in the world.

“And it's not just the extremist militants. Even those, who are not extremist by nature, will look at Israel's heavy-handedness and feel angry at them,” he said during a mass circumcision ceremony in Batu Umno in Gombak yesterday.

The Government, he said, had also been monitoring the situation involving two Malaysians caught in Lebanon for alleged links to terrorist group al-Qaeda for over a year.

“We know of their actions. We know that their network is not just in Malaysia but also in neighbouring countries,” he said.

Muhamad Razin Sharhan Mustafa Kamal, 21, and Razif Mohd Ariff, 30, are currently facing trial in a Lebanese military tribunal. The Home and Foreign ministries were watching the trial closely to ensure they were treated fairly, he said.

Emergency motion to condemn Israeli attacks in Gaza

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has directed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz to table an emergency motion in the Dewan Rakyat today to express Malaysia’s strong condemnation against the latest Israeli attacks on the Palestinians in Gaza.

The Prime Minister said the motion, among others, would:

> Strongly condemn Israeli military attacks in Gaza that have resulted in the loss of lives of Palestinians;

> Urge the United Nations (UN) Security Council to issue a resolution demanding Israel to immediately stop its military aggression;

> Urge the UN to hold an emergency session if the Security Council fails to do so;

> Express the solid support of Malaysians for the struggle of the Palestinians; and

> Forward the resolution to all parliaments, especially the American Congress, and British and European Parliaments.

Najib, who is here for the 21st Asean Summit and other related summit conferences, said he had raised the issue of the attacks against Gaza at the summit yesterday.

Malaysia condemns Israel's attack in Gaza

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has directed Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz to table an emergency motion in Parliament tomorrow to condemn Israel's latest attacks against the Palestinians in Gaza.

The motion called on the international community to act against the Zionist regime for war crimes.

"The attack is a violation of international law including human rights law, international humanitarian law and the UN charter," he told Malaysian journalists after attending the 21st Asean Summit today.

Najib said Malaysia hold firmly the position that there was no justification for the attacks against the Palestinians.

Israeli strikes kill 23 in bloodiest day for Gaza

GAZA CITY: Israeli strikes on Sunday killed 23 Palestinians including 14 women and children in the bloodiest day of its Gaza bombing campaign, the Hamas-run health ministry said.

Nine children, five of them babies and toddlers, and five women were among  the victims in violence that raised the overall number of Gazans killed to 69  in around 100 hours of relentless Israeli air strikes.    The attacks came as diplomatic efforts intensified to broker an end to the  bloodshed which began on Wednesday and has also cost the lives of three  Israelis and injured more than 50, according to medical sources.

By far the bloodiest strike was in northern Gaza City where a missile  levelled a three-storey building, killing nine members of the Al-Dallu family,  five of them children, and two other people, medics said.    Health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra named the dead as policeman  Mohammed al-Dallu, 35, Suheila al-Dallu, 50, Samah al-Dallu, 22, and five  children: Jamal and Sara, whose ages were not immediately available,  five-year-old Yussef, two-year-old Ranin, and 11-month-old Ibrahim.

The body of another woman from the same family was also pulled from the  rubble but her identity was not immediately clear.    The other two victims, who lived next door, were named as Amina Mattar  al-Muzzana, 83, and Abdullah Mohammed al-Muzzana, 22, Qudra said.    The Israeli army had no immediate comment on the strike, saying only that  the air force had hit “a few targets in northern Gaza City”.

Israel ready to strike Iran 'if necessary': Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was ready to order a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities "if necessary", in an interview aired by Channel Two television on Monday.

"I am, of course, ready to press the button if necessary," Netanyahu said in the interview.

"I hope that that will not be the case. In the final reckoning, the responsibility rests with the prime minister and as long as I am prime minister, Iran will not have the atomic bomb," he said.

"If there's no other way, Israel is ready to act."

The Israeli premier's comments came on the eve of the US presidential election and after repeated and unsuccessful pressure from his government on President Barack Obama's administration to set a clear "red line" for military action against Iran.

Israel 'admits' killing Arafat's deputy

Abu Jihad (right) Yasser Arafat (left)
Israel has for the first time admitted assassinating the deputy of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in a 1988 seaborne raid in Tunisia.

The operation was planned by the Mossad spy agency and carried out by the Sayeret Matkal elite commando unit, a report published in Israel's top-selling Yediot Aharonot said on Thursday.

Israel has long been suspected of assassinating Khalil al-Wazir, better known as Abu Jihad. But only now has the country's military censor cleared Yediot to publish the information, including an interview with the commando who killed him, at least 12 years after the newspaper obtained the information.

The operation was commanded by Nahum Lev who, in an interview before his death in 2000, spoke frankly about his role in the operation - although it was never published then.

"Abu Jihad was involved in horrible acts against civilians ... I shot him without hesitation," the commando told Yediot.

A long-time friend and deputy to Arafat who headed the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), Abu Jihad had played a leading role in directing the 1987-1993 intifada uprising against the Israeli occupation.

He was also blamed for a series of deadly attacks against Israelis before the uprising, including a 1978 attack on a bus that killed 38 Israelis.
