#PAS snubs DAP’s call to boycott polls

PAS has snubbed a call by its Pakatan Rakyat partner DAP to boycott the Kuala Besut by-election.

Its state commissioner Abdul Wahid Endut said it would not allow Barisan Nasional to retain the seat uncontested.

“There were calls to boycott the swearing-in of MPs before, yet everyone was sworn in.

“The issue of boycotting the by-election does not arise,” he said here yesterday.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng on Sunday suggested that PAS should boycott the by-election to protest alleged dirty tactics by the Election Commission (EC) during the May 5 general election.

Abdul Wahid, the Wakaf Mempelam assemblyman, said the by-election was crucial for Pakatan Rakyat, as a win for the Opposition coalition would bring the seat assembly to an equal tally of 16 representatives from both sides.

“This situation has never occurred before. We are going to approach this by-election with an aim to form a new state government should we win,” he said.

Abdul Wahid added that the party already shortlisted three to four candidates and would make an announcement at the appropriate time.

On reports that PKR is interested in fielding its own candidate in Kuala Besut, Abdul Wahid said the seat must be contested by PAS as it did so in the last general election.

He added that state deputy PAS commissioner Satiful Bahri Mamat, who is also Paka assemblyman, will be the party’s by-election director.

In Kuala Lumpur, PAS information chief Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party had no intention of boycotting the by-election.

“Although there are things which we disagree on pertaining to the electoral process by the EC, we have no intention not to contest as this seat is very crucial for PAS in Terengganu,” he told online news portal The Mole yesterday.

Tuan Ibrahim said PAS had three important requests for the EC regarding this upcoming by-election.

“Firstly, we want the EC to ensure no interference from the government’s machinery.

“Secondly, we want fair and balanced media coverage.

“Thirdly, we hope for improvement in terms of observers as well as the conduct of the EC officers during the polling day itself,” he said.

Separately, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that he would lead Barisan’s charge in the by-election.

Muhyiddin, who is Umno deputy president, said the Prime Minister had tasked him to lead the election machinery in Kuala Besut with Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh as his deputy.

“We are fully prepared for the by-election. We are working with Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said to determine our strategies to face the by-election.”

Former Kedah MB Azizan has legs amputated to prevent infection

Former Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak has gone into surgery to amputate both his legs.

The Kedah PAS commissioner entered the operating theatre at 6.30pm yesterday for the three hour surgery.

His press secretary Mohd Helmi Khalid said both of Azizan's legs had to be amputated below the knee to prevent the infection from spreading.

Azizan's family agreed to the surgery earlier in the afternoon after a discussion with PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, who paid a visit to the ailing Sungai Limau assemblyman in the hospital.

“He was able to consume soft food and speak softly in the morning. His blood level was normal and his heart is also okay,” said Mohd Helmi.

He said Azizan, 69, suffered from diabetes and started feeling pain on both his legs on Sunday night just as the results of the general election were announced.

However, Azizan only went to the Kedah Medical Centre the next day, where he was initially admitted into a normal ward before being transferred to the intensive care unit on the same night.

At 9.15pm on Tuesday, Azizan was transferred to the intensive care unit in Penang Hospital.

He slipped into a coma at 5.30am the next day.

Former Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, who visited Azizan yesterday, urged Malaysians to pray for his quick recovery.

Other visitors included new Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakcop and former Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

Azizan retained the Sungai Limau seat for the fifth term.

#GE13: Najib - Opposition's conflicting stand on #hudud shows lack of credibility

PAS and DAP's conflicting stands on hudud show that the Pakatan Rakyat partners have no credibility, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

He said PAS deputy spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din had already said the party would implement hudud but DAP was still opposing it.

"The question is what will happen to our country if we place our trust in them. We cannot have an opposing stance when it comes to base policies.

"We may have difference in opinion on certain things but in Barisan Nasional, we never think different on core national policies," said Najib at Kampung Ketapang here on Thursday.

Najib also said the Opposition was in chaos and confusion when they fielded candidates to fight against each other.

"We may have members who are contesting as independents but none of our component parties are taking on each other.

"Whereas the Opposition not only have independent candidates, PAS is fighting PKR in seven seats.

"This shows they have no common understanding," he said.

Timber! Kedah’s crying hills keep dying

Even as the issue of extensive logging activities in Pedu and Gunung Inas in Kedah remains very much in the news, yet another hill in the state has been found stripped of its forests.

An area covering 145ha about the size of 180 football fields at the Bukit Perangin Forest Reserve has been cleared of trees for timber.

The PAS-led state government reportedly approved logging in the area more than a month ago.

The concession is believed to have been awarded to high ranking officers in the Kedah Civil Service (KCS) and the land would be re-planted with rubber trees.

It is also learnt that the state government had approved a total of 780ha about the size of 963 football fields in the same area for the same purpose.

Deputy Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharom, who visited the site over two days after being alerted by locals, was shocked by the rape of the hill.

The Kubang Pasu MP said excessive and indiscriminate logging had laid the land bare, polluting the water in Sungai Kechik, Sungai Badak and Sungai Wang Perah, which are used by locals.

MEMANG GILA.

Pakatan: Hudud not part of coalition common framework

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Rakyat has reiterated that hudud law is not part of its common framework and that any decision or changes made will be in consensus with PKR, PAS and DAP.

PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the coalition was still bound by the Federal Constitution, its Buku Jingga and the joint statement made last September in which the parties said they would defend the joint policies agreed to previously.

He said the relationship between the three parties was still solid although some were trying to portray it as otherwise.

“Our main focus is still the economy. The Pakatan spirit and cooperation is still strong and is not affected even in the slightest,” he said after the Pakatan leadership council meeting here yesterday.

Anwar also refuted claims that Pakatan would throw out the Constitution if it took over, stressing that guarantees under the Constitution would be maintained.

PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang said the party stood by the joint statement last September, the Buku Jingga and on Pakatan’s common policy.

“Islam and Malays have a right but we also respect the differences in ideology in Pakatan. If we need to discuss anything, we can do it internally and not through the media. Let us discuss Bersih first,” he said.

DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said Pakatan was committed to the spirit of the Constitution which included upholding Islam as the official religion while allowing other religions to be practised freely.

Hudud — A Thorn For Pakatan : PAS and DAP Leaders Still Squabbling Over Issue

PETALING JAYA: The thorny issue of hudud continues to bug Pakatan Rakyat, with its leaders making contradictory statements.

PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang claimed it was a nonissue while DAP chairman Karpal Singh stopped short of asking the former to shut up until the coalition thrashes out the issue.

Hadi wants Karpal to stop harping on hudud and focus on their common goal while Karpal wants Hadi to stop making statements on the contentious issue on behalf of the coalition.
