Datuk Seri Peter Chin
KUALA LUMPUR: Companies that choose to “go green” with the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) will learn how to cut their operating costs by up to 40% while contributing towards nature conservation activities.

Under the “Recycle for Nature” programme, which was launched yesterday, participating companies and their employees will be trained to recycle and be rewarded with “green points” based on the volume of waste they recycle.

These points will be converted into cash by the door-to-door recycling scheme operators Recycle & Reward.

“The cash will go towards MNS' nature conservation activities,” said its executive director Shah Redza Hussein after signing a partnership agreement with GreenTech Malaysia, Recycle & Reward and Green Verks at the 3rd International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia.

The funds, he said, would mostly go towards the protection activities being carried out in the Be-lum Temenggor Forest Complex in Perak.

‘Selangor rivers polluted’

KUALA LUMPUR: Most rivers in Selangor which are the main sources of water supply in the state have been found to be polluted and could potentially become a serious threat to the availability of this basic necessity.

Universiti Putra Malaysia Environmental Forensics Research Centre unit head Dr Hafizan Juahir said the clean water sections of the rivers were getting shorter due to development, especially for housing.

For example, he said, the length of Sungai Langat, the leading source of raw water in the state, was 149.3km -long but the clean water section had been reduced to only 49.3km while the remaining were polluted.

“The entire length of Sungai Langat has entered the Class 3 and 4 categories of being polluted and if the quality worsens, it can be considered a dead river,” he said.

He said that in the Hulu Langat district, the situation was more serious as there was too much development especially condominiums, shop houses while population increase had also negatively impacted water quality through washing and domestic waste dumping in the river.

Awang Adek: ATM robbery situation under control

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 10, 2012): A total of 17 automated teller machine (ATM) robberies were reported by banking institutions this year until September compared with only five last year, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin who said there are more than 11,000 ATMs nationwide, said the situation was still under control.

"Despite the hike in cases, the situation is still under control following security features applied to ATMs by banks," he said in reply to a supplementary question from Fong Kui Lun (DAP-Bukit Bintang).

Fong had enquired about the new security features used by banks in Malaysia to curb ATM robberies.

Awang Adek said that among the security features implemented was the installation of fire alarms at ATM premises to deter robbers using oxy-acetylene cutters.

He said local banking institutions had to meet the minimum international standards to ensure that ATM machines could not be prised open.

"Banks must also fix the machines to the ground, thus making it difficult to remove," he said.

"Furthermore, security guards and mobile patrol units also monitor high-risk areas where ATMs are located outside the premises, he said.

JOHOR BARU: Not only did four men steal motorcycles but they made a huge profit of RM63,000 by selling the parts on Facebook.

He described the group as “smart” but used their brains and knowledge wrongly.

DCP Mohd Mokhtar added that the four suspects, aged between 22 and 25, were believed to be involved in more than nine cases of motorcycle theft in Kluang.

KTMB introduces manual to reduce panic during train accidents

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 — An emergency action plan manual has been drawn up by the fire and rescue department and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) to reduce panic among passengers onboard trains during accidents.

KTMB executive vice-president Lt Kol Sarbini Tijan said the manual contained information on rescue procedures and a guide on handling crises involving train services.

“The manual is meant to be a reference and guide, not only to the department personnel and KTMB staff but all interested parties, like passengers.

“If all parties know their duties, they can help smoothen the rescue process and help overcome a crisis or mishap involving train service,” he told a media conference here today.

He said KTM ferried about 100,000 passengers daily or four million a month.

“As such, all passengers must know how to rescue themselves and reduce panic, in the event of an incident,” added Sarbini.

Earlier, 15 KTMB stations in the Klang Valley were awarded 'Friend of Fire Hydrant' certificates, in appreciation of their commitment to looking after fire hydrants at the stations.

On Sept 30 at about 6pm, Amutha was on her way to a stationery wholesaler near Kampung Hulu to buy items for her school when a motorcyclist's haphazard riding caused her to scrape her car against another vehicle.

Amutha scolded the motorcyclist, a middle-aged man.

However, the man trailed her and kicked her car when she stopped.

“He shouted profanities, demanding that I come out of my car,” she said, adding that her 68-year-old mother and eight-year-old niece were in the car.

Limit number of nursing grads to reduce glut, health practitioners tell Govt

PETALING JAYA: Health practitioners have asked the Government to be stricter with the moratorium limiting the number of nursing graduates to reduce the glut.

Malaysian Medical Association president Dr S.R. Manalan said many fresh graduates were jobless and did not have the right skills.

“The quality of nursing graduates is not up to par. Many take up nursing thinking they can get a job easily, or as a last resort because they can't get into other courses.

“When they go into the field and realise it is a difficult job, they get disillusioned,” he said.

It was previously reported that some 8,000 nursing graduates are still unemployed as there are only places for 1,500 nurses in the private sector.

While Dr Manalan said their training had to be improved, the attitude of fresh graduates had been found wanting too.

All-in-one checks at roadblocks

KUALA LUMPUR: Roadblocks in the future will be comprehensive ones where a motorist could be checked not just for speeding but also licence plates, road tax and a host of other offences.

This is made possible through an integrated approach in enforcement operations by the various road and traffic enforcement agencies in the country like police, Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).

These agencies, along with Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) and the Road Safety Department, as well as Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Putrajaya Corporation (PPJ) have drawn up a standard operating procedure (SOP) to help streamline the enforcement process on traffic offences.

Inspector-General of police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said this move would eliminate overlapping enforcement work.

“As there are so many agencies, things can get confusing in terms of which agency does what.

AES system successfully reduces number of errant motorists

LUMUT: The Automated Enforcement System (AES) has been successful in reducing the number of errant motorists in the 14 areas which had the cameras installed.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said there was a drastic reduction in the number of offences in various areas.

Some areas, he said, had also seen zero number of traffic offences, which was the main objective of the system.

“This success shows that the Government could raise awareness on traffic safety and rules,” he told a press conference after the inaugural Manjung district level private pre-schoolchildren colouring competition in Sitiawan yesterday.

Kong, who is Lumut MP, stressed that the system was successful at creating a certain perception among motorists, which made them fearful of being caught.

"The speedboats will be utilised and will replace MMEA boats currently being restored," he told reporters after receiving the speedboats here.

"With the new assets, we can deploy more speedboats for enforement unlike before where we had only seven speedboats and three frigates."

No trial in France over purchase of submarines, says prosecutor

KUALA LUMPUR: A prominent French prosecutor has refuted reports circulating in some news portals of an ongoing trial in France over allegations of corruption involving the purchase of two submarines by Malaysia.

“I am aware about all the fuss kicked up by certain media (organisations) in Malaysia over this matter, but what I can say is that this is nothing more than a trial by the media,” said Yves Charpenel, former head of prosecution in France, now a state prosecutor and an executive member of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA).

He was here to attend the four-day IAACA conference and general meeting which ended on Sunday.

Following a complaint filed in 2009 by Suaram that a French company had allegedly paid bribes to a Malaysian firm for the purchase of two Scorpene submarines in 2002, he said that two independent “investigating judges” started their investigations earlier this year.

Charpenel said it was anybody’s right to file a complaint and due to the secret nature of the investigations, some resorted to complaining to the media.

Peace in Mindanao will benefit Sabah

IN APRIL 2001, I travelled into no man’s land to visit the captured Camp Abubakar, which used to be the headquarters of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in Maguindanao, Mindanao, in Southern Philippines. Camp Abubakar was the symbol of the MILF Islamic rebellion against the Philippines government since 1992.

The 5,000ha stronghold fell into the hands of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) when the then Philippine president Joseph Estrada ordered ground and air bombardments on the camp.

On July 10, 2000, after seven days of relentless attack, Estrada raised the Philippine flag in the camp.

During the journey, I stopped at a dilapidated elementary school which sheltered 300 families who fled their villages during intense fighting between the MILF and AFP. The villagers told me that they hoped peace will come to the MILF heartland.

Eleven years later, it looks like the villagers’ hope for peace will come true. On Saturday in Kuala Lumpur, the Philippine government and MILF reached a preliminary peace agreement to end the insurgency which has left more than 150,000 people dead and the country’s south poverty-stricken.

Budget money boosts security

PETALING JAYA: With RM10,000 allocated to them under Budget 2013, resident associations (RAs) are set to beef up security in their neighbourhoods with top-notch facilities.

Extended perimeter fencing, CCTV cameras and communication devices for the patrolling security guards are among the upgraded security features the RAs are planning to install to improve security in their areas.

Under Budget 2013, the Government has allocated RM40mil for 4,025 RAs registered with the Registrar of Societies to support their role in improving security. Each association will receive RM10,000.

The Government has also allocated RM39mil to support Rukun Tetangga (RT) activities.

USJ 20/1-20/3 RA secretary Leong Siew Meng said the association planned to use the money to extend the security fencing and upgrade CCTV coverage in the area.

“The allocation is timely as we have been wanting to upgrade our neighbourhood's security features for some time,” he added.

Couple who donated dead son’s vital organs honoured by hospital

GEORGE TOWN: Like any parents, former hotel worker V. Gopaldass and his wife were heartbroken when they lost their son in a road accident in July.

But their grief did not stop their wish to help others. They consented to donate their son's vital organs.

Gopaldass, 56, said he realised that his son's death could help to save the lives of others.

“It was not an easy decision, but my wife and I agreed to it although my son did not make a pledge when he was alive.

“We know that thousands are seeking help, and our son's organs can save the lives of others. At least, he will live' again,” he said at the Children's Dental Care & Dental Training College in Sepoy Lines Road yesterday.

Gopaldass and his wife S. Mallika, 49, a nurse, attended the “Walkathon 2012” in Polo Ground to receive certificates and a momento from Penang Hospital director Datuk Dr Yasmin Sulaiman.
