GEORGE TOWN: Like any parents, former hotel worker V. Gopaldass and his wife were heartbroken when they lost their son in a road accident in July.
But their grief did not stop their wish to help others. They consented to donate their son's vital organs.
Gopaldass, 56, said he realised that his son's death could help to save the lives of others.
“It was not an easy decision, but my wife and I agreed to it although my son did not make a pledge when he was alive.
“We know that thousands are seeking help, and our son's organs can save the lives of others. At least, he will live' again,” he said at the Children's Dental Care & Dental Training College in Sepoy Lines Road yesterday.
Gopaldass and his wife S. Mallika, 49, a nurse, attended the “Walkathon 2012” in Polo Ground to receive certificates and a momento from Penang Hospital director Datuk Dr Yasmin Sulaiman.
The couple's son Phoshaggan, 18, died while he was riding his motorcycle home from school.
Gopaldass said his son was admitted to the Sungai Petani Hospital before being transferred to the Alor Setar Hospital. He was declared brain dead on July 7.
The couple have another son Nishaallen, 16, who is studying in SMK Tunku Ismail, Sungai Petani.
Dr Yasmin said 203,497 people in Malaysia have registered as organ donors as of Aug 31.
She said the statistics by the National Transplant Resources Centre revealed that out of the number, 26,006 donors or 12.78% of them are from Penang.
More than 150 people took part in the 2.2km walkathon which started at 7am.
The event was held to promote and raise awareness about organ donation.
It was jointly organised by Penang Hospital Transplant Resources Centre and Penang Hospital Board of Visitors.
