Suspicious wires discovered, but no bomb on Delta plane

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The discovery of suspicious wires in plastic straws aboard a Madrid-bound Delta Air Lines jetliner on Thursday night forced the plane to return to New York, but authorities said they searched the aircraft and found no bomb.

Delta Flight 126, a Boeing 767-300 with 206 passengers aboard, landed safely at John F. Kennedy airport shortly after 9:30 p.m. EDT (0130 GMT Friday), about 90 minutes after takeoff, according to the airline.

Delta described the situation as a "security concern" without elaborating. Out of an abundance of caution, the airline said in a statement, the plane turned around and returned to New York.

DPM: Repeal of Sedition Act proof that Govt walks the talk

TAIPING: The repeal of the Sedition Act 1948 which will be implemented soon is proof that the Govern-ment is not making “empty promises” about political transformation, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said the move to replace the Act with a new National Harmony Act was also proof that the Government has kept its word about making changes both economically and politically.

The Bill on the new Act is scheduled to be tabled at the next Parliament sitting.

“We don’t just talk or make announcements. Some of the laws we introduced we have enforced. This is the latest step to show that the Government is in tune with the people,” he told reporters after the ground breaking ceremony of a new bridge in Kampung Siputeh, about 70km from here yesterday.

A Letter From A Distraught Reader

An Anonymous government servant has sent us a letter regarding the attack in Putrajaya. He was very much distraught with the event and made a plea to the Malaysians Demand Security readers.

I am a concerned civil servant working in one of the Ministries in Putrajaya. As most of the readers are well aware of, last fateful Monday afternoon a couple went on a rampage outside Complex B of the Prime Minister's Department. The baseless act caused the male accomplice his life while his girlfriend, a someone's wife was shot in her right thigh and warded at the Putrajaya Hospital.

The couple, known as Khalil Afandi and Muhdalina is a clear cut example of how careful Malaysians should be with the act of obsession with certain dogma and belief. Such act can be fueled by many reasons and as a Malaysian, i can certainly bet that this poor man was driven by his confused stance on politics. While some call him a mentally ill person, I however think that his action can be considered as an act of terrorism! And I pray that such incident will be the first and last to hit Putrajaya. He writes well and I have managed to sift through his now suspended blog where he expressed hatred to the current ruling government and wanting to kill the Sultans.

I truly hope that this incident can open the eyes of the citizens on this country to pay close attention to those who are too inclined with political parties that spread the message of hatred and vengeance to the ruling government. As a government servant I can safely say that I am non partisan and I shall vote whoever practises what he preaches, who fulfills all the promises and most importantly does not resort to cheap and dirty politics. Oppressed political parties or entities will do anything to take down its opponents and some may just resort to terrorism to ensure such. Hence I beg you readers to stop finger pointing and start using your discretion to distinguish who is fulfilling promises and who is merely using his influence to fuel agression and outrage.

Heartless passers-by

GEORGE TOWN: Seven people walked past snatch theft victim Tan Kim Chuan (pic), 60, without lifting a finger to help her as she lay unconscious on the road with a cracked skull at the Rifle Range flats.

CCTV footage showed her lying on the road for about seven minutes (see sequence of events on the right).

Kim Chuan, who fell and knocked her head on the road in the 6.02am incident on Tuesday, succumbed to her injuries nine hours later at the Penang Hospital.

Her sister Lay Yong, 63, wants the passers-by “to listen to their conscience”.

“Those who saw her should have done something the least they could have done was shout for help.

“How could they have just walked by? I am angry but what can I do?” Lay Yong said at the Penang Hospital mortuary yesterday.

New Harmony Act to protect multi-racial society

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sedition Act 1948 will be repealed and replaced with a new National Harmony Act in the latest measure under the country's political transformation plan, announced Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The Prime Minister also announced that recent amendments to laws as well as new ones relating to civil liberties would be implemented immediately.

They are the Security Offences Act (Special Measures), the Printing Presses and Publications Act involving newspapers' annual permit as well as the Universities and University Colleges Act that allows students to be involved in politics.

He said the decision to replace the Sedition Act was made to find a mechanism that could determine the best balance between guaranteeing every citizen's freedom of expression and the need to tackle the complex nature of the country's multi-racial and multi-religious society.

“With this new Act, we will be better equipped to manage our national fault lines. It will also help to strengthen national cohesion by protecting national unity and nurturing religious harmony,” Najib said in his speech at a dinner with the Attorney-General's Chambers last night.

He said that without the ideal balance, freedom of speech would be stunted, the people's creativity and innovativeness would be dulled while at the same time unleashing chauvinism and extremism.

This balance, said Najib, must be achieved within a society that is more open, with access to the information highway which could trigger information overflow, higher level of education and socio-economic achievements and higher expectations.

Man killed and woman injured after running amok at PM’s Department

Drama at PM’s Department: CCTV and Facebook images showing Khalil and the woman (below) after they were shot when they went on a rampage with samurai swords.

PUTRAJAYA: The daily routine at Complex B of the Prime Minister's Department turned chaotic when a man and woman, seemingly harmless as they approached the entrance, suddenly whipped out samurai swords.

The pair triggered security to swing into action when they started to wave the swords menacingly.

The two damaged cars and attacked policemen before being shot. The man, identified as Khalil Afandi Abd Hamid, 37, later died at the Putrajaya Hospital.

When they showed up at the entrance of the office at 2.30pm yesterday, an auxiliary policeman rushed out to stop them from entering but was instead taken hostage.

Drama at PM’s Department: CCTV and Facebook images showing Khalil and the woman (below) after they were shot when they went on a rampage with samurai swords.
“The man held the samurai sword to the policeman's neck and walked past the security post before releasing him,” said Putrajaya OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Razak Majid.

“The duo then ran amok and smashed the windows of a Hyundai Accent and a Perodua Kancil parked in the open air car park of the complex,” he said, adding that the rampage lasted about five minutes before an anti-crime squad arrived.

ACP Abdul Razak said the two were very aggressive and even attacked members of the squad by smashing the front windscreen of their vehicle.

At the same time, two officers arrived in another vehicle and attempted to apprehend the duo but they, too, were attacked.

“One of the officers then fired three shots, hitting the man in his left arm and groin, while the woman was shot in the thigh.

“The suspects were immediately rushed to the Putrajaya Hospital for treatment but the man died 15 minutes after arrival,” he said.

Witnesses said the suspects, who had arrived in a car, initially looked calm as they walked towards the entrance.

However, as they got closer to the security post, the man started shouting, apparently complaining about the services of a government agency. They suddenly whipped out the swords and started swinging them, causing passers-by to run helter-skelter.

ACP Abdul Razak said they have yet to establish the motive, but suspected the two could be related to a deviationist sect.

Initial investigations showed the pair had only known each other for about a week and added that Khalil's wife had come to the hospital after being informed of the incident.

“The wife said the man had declared himself as Imam Mahadi',” he said.

Imam Mahadi is mentioned in several sunnah as the promised messiah who will arrive to reestablish uprightness before the day of judgement.

The husband of the woman also visited her at the hospital.

The female suspect, a 28-year-old mother of two, is being detained for further investigation.

ACP Abdul Razak said police recovered the two samurai swords from the scene.

The complex is located about 100m away from the Perdana Putra Building which houses the Prime Minister's Office.

Complex B houses, among others, the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) and the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu).

Malaysia ratifies ILO's occupational safety framework

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is the third country in Asia after Japan and South Korea to ratify the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Promotional Fremework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention 2006 (C187).

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the signing of the C187 with ILO showed the government's commitment in ensuring occupational safety and health.

"We can meet the safety standards set by the international body.

"This is also a commitment by the government to make sure the health and safety of employees in the country are protected," he told reporters after launching the national-level Occupational Safety and Health Week 2012, here.

On June 7, Malaysia confirmed the ILO Convention on Occupational Safety and Health to join developed countries in putting safety and health first at the workplace.

In line with the confirmation, Malaysia also agreed to be monitored by the ILO in matters related to occupational health and safety and to meet its high standards.

Internet Safety Tips for High School Kids

High school Internet safety means controlling privacy and reputation

High school teens are living their lives online. They’re checking their friends’ status updates (and posting their own), they’re watching their favorite shows, they’re uploading photos and videos, they’re playing games, chatting on IM, video chatting, exploring their interests, and accessing information and files that fuel their passions. They’re also becoming part of Internet culture, where it’s all about what’s new right now. Because information on the Internet moves at the speed of light, high schoolers are likely to get involved in new stuff long before you’ve gotten used to yesterday’s news.

Internet safety at this age requires that you continue to monitor high-schoolers’ online lives, staying as involved as you can and injecting your own values to counteract some of the less desirable aspects of the Internet. In the high school years, teens’ online interactions can really affect their futures. Much of what they discover and contribute to can be positive and enriching -- if they play by the rules. If not, their privacy, reputation, and even their physical safety could be at risk.

Safety measures at new mall

IN view of the recent abduction and robbery cases that have taken place at carparks in the country, The Star checked out several parking spots in Ipoh and spoke to members of the public on how they feel about parking there.

Being the latest and newest shopping mall to come up in Ipoh, Aeon Station 18’s indoor parking area was brightly lit and equipped with close-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) at various entrance and exit points.

There were also clear signs to indicate that the carpark area was under CCTV surveillance so as to deter would-be criminals.

AirAsia airline staff in LCCT fear for their safety

AIRASIA is not happy with the current security measures at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) carparks and wants Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) to fulfil their promise of beefing up security.

The Star reported on April 28 (Molest at the carpark) that AirAsia Berhad wanted better security at LCCT after attacks on cabin crew.

In a statement, MAHB said it would work with Pasukan Gerak Am (PGA) and other relevant authorities to ensure the safety of carpark users.

Risky zone: According to Fareh, it is unsafe to park at Zone D at night as it is next to an oil palm estate.
“We have taken measures to install CCTVs at selected locations at the parking zones at LCCT-KLIA. Malaysia Airports’ security personnel, PGA and private security guards are also deployed in the area.”

However, AirAsia Berhad flight operations director Capt Datuk Fareh Ishraf Mazputra felt that to-date, not enough was done to ensure the safety of carpark users.

“Our staff have emailed us that they do not see security guards patrolling every day.

Hospitals must beef up security

SEREMBAN: All government hospitals and health facilities have been directed to tighten security following the spate of thefts at three private hospitals in the Klang Valley last month.

Health Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman said all medical equipment used during working hours should be kept in a secured location to prevent thefts.

“The usage and movement of every equipment should also be recorded. Expensive equipment should always be kept under maximum security,” he said in an order to all hospitals and health facilities under the ministry.

Three private hospitals incurred losses of more than RM5mil when thieves carted away medical equipment from their premises within two weeks.

Security guards who are merely window dressing

RECENTLY, there have been numerous reports of kidnapping, theft, stolen cars etc in parking lots at major shopping complexes.

My brother’s car window was smashed and his backpack, containing sports shirts and shoes, were stolen.

When he reported it to the management, they said that “it happens all the time”.

What appalled us was that if they knew that this takes place all the time, what action have they undertaken to prevent it from happening?

They couldn’t care less, but we are talking about people’s property and lives.

‘Be alert and stay safe’

Smash-grab victim takes to the Internet to spread message of vigilance

PETALING JAYA: A vehicle smashand-grab victim has set up a website called Be Alert Stay Safe to spread the message of vigilance.

The website, www.bealertstaysafe.tumblr.com, features stories from victims as well as those who witness similar incidents.

Ling (who only wants to be known by her first name) said: “I’m so tired of people just talking about it. I’m very angry at what’s happening and Malaysians need to stop talking and take action.”
She had lost her laptop and six months’ worth of dissertation research in an instant when the assailants smashed her car during a traffic jam.

In an interview recently, Ling said her traumatic experience was worsened by the “nonchalant attitude” of the motorists around her, who did not bother to get out of their car despite witnessing the incident.

Another woman who has taken to the Internet to spread awareness is Anna Chew, whose women’s e-magazine ( www.venusbuzz.com) runs an awareness campaign called the CARing project.

Besides featuring articles on selfprotection tips, the website also has a “car park rating system” where people can rate the safety of shopping mall car parks in the Klang Valley.

The ratings are based on 10 questions, including whether there were CCTVs, active security guard patrolling, buggy services and panic buttons installed.
Chew said reports would be compiled based on the ratings received and handed over to each shopping mall’s management.

“We hope the respective managements will take this seriously and not implement superficial services just to make themselves look good,” she stressed, adding that women must be proactive.

When contacted, Malaysian Association for Shopping and High-Rise Complex Management general manager Evelyn Lo said they would be having an open dialogue with Bukit Aman next Friday.

“We will be discussing a variety of security issues and we have invited all the shopping malls,” she said, urging all mall visitors to remain alert of their surroundings despite existing security systems.

Mid Valley Megamall public relations assistant manager Stephanie Tan said security had been beefed up in the mall’s car park after a recent assault on a female shopper there.

She said the mall had increased the number of panic buttons, adding that these were prominently displayed on black and red checkered pillars marked with a “HELP” sign.

“We also have escort services for which shoppers can request from the information counter, car park lobby security booths or our hotline,” she said.-( MyStar)
