Israeli strikes kill 23 in bloodiest day for Gaza

GAZA CITY: Israeli strikes on Sunday killed 23 Palestinians including 14 women and children in the bloodiest day of its Gaza bombing campaign, the Hamas-run health ministry said.

Nine children, five of them babies and toddlers, and five women were among  the victims in violence that raised the overall number of Gazans killed to 69  in around 100 hours of relentless Israeli air strikes.    The attacks came as diplomatic efforts intensified to broker an end to the  bloodshed which began on Wednesday and has also cost the lives of three  Israelis and injured more than 50, according to medical sources.

By far the bloodiest strike was in northern Gaza City where a missile  levelled a three-storey building, killing nine members of the Al-Dallu family,  five of them children, and two other people, medics said.    Health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra named the dead as policeman  Mohammed al-Dallu, 35, Suheila al-Dallu, 50, Samah al-Dallu, 22, and five  children: Jamal and Sara, whose ages were not immediately available,  five-year-old Yussef, two-year-old Ranin, and 11-month-old Ibrahim.

The body of another woman from the same family was also pulled from the  rubble but her identity was not immediately clear.    The other two victims, who lived next door, were named as Amina Mattar  al-Muzzana, 83, and Abdullah Mohammed al-Muzzana, 22, Qudra said.    The Israeli army had no immediate comment on the strike, saying only that  the air force had hit “a few targets in northern Gaza City”.

Pahang Sultan expresses disappointment over freedom of religion statement

KUANTAN: The Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah, has expressed his disappointment and sadness over a statement by an Opposition party leader relating to the freedom of religion of Malaysians, including the Malays.

Describing the statement as nonsense and illogical, he said the party concerned was too vocal in its discussion on religious matters without considering its effect on society, especially the Muslims.

“As the leader of the Islamic religion and Ruler in Pahang, I'm saddened and disappointed with the statement. I advise people not to listen to such talk,” he told reporters after the state-level Maal Hijrah celebrations here yesterday.

Such matters should be left to the Islamic religious councils, who were better informed, he said.

On Nov 3, a pro-Opposition news portal had reported PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar as allegedly saying that freedom of religion should be for Muslims as well.

She had allegedly made the remarks while replying to a question at a forum on the Islamic state in Selangor early this month.

Pahang mufti Datuk Abdul Rah-man Osman advised Muslims to be careful with such parties and statements, adding that these could lead to the eventual deviation and destruction of the Islamic faith.

Sex blogger Alvin Tan loses scholarship

The National University of Singapore has terminated sex blogger Alvin Tan’s scholarship over his Internet sexploits.

The prestigious university, however, stopped short of expelling the 24-year-old from law school but he will have to pay full non-subsidised fees as a foreign student should he resume studies, reported Singapore Straits Times, quoting unnamed sources.

Tan was an Asean scholar and had been on “leave of absence” from his classes for almost a year when he started uploading pornographic pictures and videos of himself and his girlfriend Vivian Lee on a blog titled “Sumptuous Erotica”.

Tan has refused to comment on the university’s decision.

“I’m sorry but I can’t comment. I’m bound by a confidentiality agreement,” he said.

The university has also kept mum, with the spokesman stating that the school’s disciplinary proceedings were confidential.

An estimate shows that it may have cost the Singapore government – the benefactor of the Asean scholarship programme – at least RM275,000 to fund all of Tan’s seven years of study in the city state.

Unplug devices to save power

Using energy-saving bulbs, turning off the lights and the air-conditioner are among the ways to trim the electric bill. One overlooked option is to unplug appliances when they are not in use.

“Switching off the device still allows a small flow of electricity. It is best to unplug the device to save electricity,” said Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) Green City Committee chairman Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainudin.

He said that with the increase in the electrical tariffs, the council was looking for options for the people.

“We are looking at things that can be easily done at home to help save the environment and reduce the people’s electricity bills. Everyone must make the extra effort to carry out energy checks and decide what appliances to unplug.

“Even when your appliances are technically switched off, they continue to suck out energy and your wallet and this is known as phantom load,” he said.

Khairul added that the committee wanted to create awareness among consumers that they were paying electric bills for items that are plugged in but not in use.

“As long as they are plugged in, the personal computer, DVD player, CD player, air-dryer and television are taking up energy when you think they are off, and in no small amounts either,” he said.

He added that on average a home in an urban area spends about RM4,100 a year on electric ity bills and these homes could be paying at least 5% to 10% on electricity for items that were plugged in throughout the day.

“I have been told that a television set on stand-by mode consumes 21 watts while a DVD player takes 10.58 watts and the cumulative effect of having so many devices plugged in can add up, thus hurting the consumer’s efforts to be eco-friendly and drain the household financially,” he said.

Khairul advised consumers to plug home electrical devices into a single smart power strip with an on/off switch to give convenience to turn off all power to the devices in one easy step.

“Once the power strip is turned off, no power will be delivered to the outlets thus eliminating power wastage. Switch off your appliances when you go to bed and when you leave home for holidays,” he said.

Khairul also urged Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to give a gift of two power strips to all its consumers in Malaysia to help people save on energy usage.

“TNB recently announced that it had posted net profit RM1bil in the fourth quarter ended Aug 31, more than four-fold hike compared with RM965.4mil for 2011. TNB has earned a good profit and it must give something back to the consumers,” he said.

Khairul added that he would officially send a letter to TNB’s chairman Tan Sri Amar Leo Moggie to provide the power strips to consumers before the year end.

On another green initiative, Khairul, said the committee is also having the mobile payment counters at certain areas to allow residents to settle their bills while shopping, thus a cut on carbon footprint.

“We want fewer people to drive on Petaling Jaya roads to cut down on carbon emissions,” he said.
