Four feared drowned after car plunges into river

ALOR SETAR: Four people are feared drowned after their car plunged into the raging Sungai Padang Kerbau here.

Housewife Siti Fatimah Hussin, 34, who witnessed the incident, said she was shocked to see the Proton Saga going out of control before it plunged into the river near Kampung Titi Haji Idris at 1pm yesterday.

“It was not speeding at all. The car floated for some five metres before it began to sink and disappear,” she said, adding that she then alerted the police.

Rescuers from the police, the state Fire and Rescue Department as well as the Civil Defence Department (JPAM) combed the area for six hours, while 20 others used three boats to search for the car.

The scene attracted hundreds of villagers.

The search operation was called off six hours later due to failing light. It will resume today.

Kota Setar JPAM operations official Mohd Faizol Ab Aziz said the rescue team had yet to locate the car.

Kota Setar OCPD Asst Comm Adzaman Mohd Jan said the police had yet to ascertain the identity of the car occupants.
