AirAsia airline staff in LCCT fear for their safety

AIRASIA is not happy with the current security measures at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) carparks and wants Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) to fulfil their promise of beefing up security.

The Star reported on April 28 (Molest at the carpark) that AirAsia Berhad wanted better security at LCCT after attacks on cabin crew.

In a statement, MAHB said it would work with Pasukan Gerak Am (PGA) and other relevant authorities to ensure the safety of carpark users.

Risky zone: According to Fareh, it is unsafe to park at Zone D at night as it is next to an oil palm estate.
“We have taken measures to install CCTVs at selected locations at the parking zones at LCCT-KLIA. Malaysia Airports’ security personnel, PGA and private security guards are also deployed in the area.”

However, AirAsia Berhad flight operations director Capt Datuk Fareh Ishraf Mazputra felt that to-date, not enough was done to ensure the safety of carpark users.

“Our staff have emailed us that they do not see security guards patrolling every day.

Hospitals must beef up security

SEREMBAN: All government hospitals and health facilities have been directed to tighten security following the spate of thefts at three private hospitals in the Klang Valley last month.

Health Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman said all medical equipment used during working hours should be kept in a secured location to prevent thefts.

“The usage and movement of every equipment should also be recorded. Expensive equipment should always be kept under maximum security,” he said in an order to all hospitals and health facilities under the ministry.

Three private hospitals incurred losses of more than RM5mil when thieves carted away medical equipment from their premises within two weeks.

Security guards who are merely window dressing

RECENTLY, there have been numerous reports of kidnapping, theft, stolen cars etc in parking lots at major shopping complexes.

My brother’s car window was smashed and his backpack, containing sports shirts and shoes, were stolen.

When he reported it to the management, they said that “it happens all the time”.

What appalled us was that if they knew that this takes place all the time, what action have they undertaken to prevent it from happening?

They couldn’t care less, but we are talking about people’s property and lives.

‘Be alert and stay safe’

Smash-grab victim takes to the Internet to spread message of vigilance

PETALING JAYA: A vehicle smashand-grab victim has set up a website called Be Alert Stay Safe to spread the message of vigilance.

The website, www.bealertstaysafe.tumblr.com, features stories from victims as well as those who witness similar incidents.

Ling (who only wants to be known by her first name) said: “I’m so tired of people just talking about it. I’m very angry at what’s happening and Malaysians need to stop talking and take action.”
She had lost her laptop and six months’ worth of dissertation research in an instant when the assailants smashed her car during a traffic jam.

In an interview recently, Ling said her traumatic experience was worsened by the “nonchalant attitude” of the motorists around her, who did not bother to get out of their car despite witnessing the incident.

Another woman who has taken to the Internet to spread awareness is Anna Chew, whose women’s e-magazine ( www.venusbuzz.com) runs an awareness campaign called the CARing project.

Besides featuring articles on selfprotection tips, the website also has a “car park rating system” where people can rate the safety of shopping mall car parks in the Klang Valley.

The ratings are based on 10 questions, including whether there were CCTVs, active security guard patrolling, buggy services and panic buttons installed.
Chew said reports would be compiled based on the ratings received and handed over to each shopping mall’s management.

“We hope the respective managements will take this seriously and not implement superficial services just to make themselves look good,” she stressed, adding that women must be proactive.

When contacted, Malaysian Association for Shopping and High-Rise Complex Management general manager Evelyn Lo said they would be having an open dialogue with Bukit Aman next Friday.

“We will be discussing a variety of security issues and we have invited all the shopping malls,” she said, urging all mall visitors to remain alert of their surroundings despite existing security systems.

Mid Valley Megamall public relations assistant manager Stephanie Tan said security had been beefed up in the mall’s car park after a recent assault on a female shopper there.

She said the mall had increased the number of panic buttons, adding that these were prominently displayed on black and red checkered pillars marked with a “HELP” sign.

“We also have escort services for which shoppers can request from the information counter, car park lobby security booths or our hotline,” she said.-( MyStar)

Stop the blame game and focus on saving the hills

ENOUGH has been said about the hills of Penang.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has blamed the previous state government for almost everything that has gone wrong in Penang since he took over. And that includes the dying hills of Penang.
The Barisan Nasional opposition, on the other hand, is accusing the state government of not doing its part to save the hills.

As the finger-pointing continues, the fact is that the hills are crying to be saved.
We are sick and tired of the blame game that has the people of Penang caught in the middle.
Ordinary people have been speaking out and protesting against what they see as unplanned development.
The fact that middle-class communities are voicing their concern in public protests is a sign that things are not right in the state’s development policy.

Timbalan Pengarah Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah Narkotik Bukit Aman Datuk Mohd Zulyadaen Ismail berkata tindakan itu bukan hanya dapat membantu polis tetapi sekaligus dapat mengurangkan kadar jenayah di pusat-pusat beli belah.

ATM Security Tips

Because of the variety of ATMs, the unique characteristics of each installation, and crime considerations at each location, no single formula can guarantee the security of ATM customers. Therefore, it is necessary for ATM customers to consider the environment around each ATM and various procedures for remaining safe when using an ATM.

Criminals select their victims and targets, focusing on the unaware or unprepared. Criminals are also drawn to environmental conditions that enhance the opportunity to successfully complete their crime. There are a number of things you can do to increase your personal security and reduce your risk of becoming an ATM crime victim.
The following crime prevention tips can help make the use of ATM’s safer for everyone.

RAKYAT MAKIN HILANG RASA HORMAT..

Firefighters feeling the heat

KOTA BARU: The Fire and Rescue Department is monitoring the increasing number of its personnel who are suffering from mental stress. Director-general Datuk Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim said although it had not reached a critical stage, efforts by the department to set up counselling services had helped to reduce stress levels.
“The nature of their job, as well as working on 12-hour shifts and being on constant standby, have all resulted in psychological issues among firemen.

Changing Govt is not like changing your clothes, says Chua

RAUB: Changing the Government is not as simple as changing clothes, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

He said the Opposition could say all it wanted about toppling the Government, but ultimately the power rested with the people.

“The people hold the right to choose the Government they want because they are the boss. But I only have one request — please use your vote wisely when the time comes,” Dr Chua said at a dinner here on Sunday.
He said the people had to ask themselves this: “If Pakatan Rakyat replaced Barisan Nasional, is everything going to become better? Can Pakatan do better than Barisan? If not, then why change?”

Proposals to ensure food security

The recent Rio+20 Summit upheld the right of all people to food, and the need to support small farmers and promote ecologically-sound agriculture.

FOOD security and sustainable agriculture was one of the most important topics at the recent Rio+20 Summit, for the simple reason that all of us have to eat to survive, and agriculture has to be ecologically sustainable for production to continue into the future.

While the negotiators were busily hammering out a quite satisfactory text on this topic in a small room, a more interesting discussion was taking place on Food and Nutrition Security in the huge plenary hall sitting 2,000 people.

China sends more ships

Four surveillance vessels deployed to disputed Spratly islands

BEIJING: China has deployed four patrol ships to a disputed area of the South China Sea amid a deepening row with Vietnam over competing territorial claims.

The ships, described by the Xinhua News Agency as surveillance vessels, reached what China calls the Huayang reef in the Spratly islands yesterday.

China last month summoned Vietnam’s ambassador in Beijing and protested a law adopted by the Vietnamese parliament that places the disputed Spratly islands under Hanoi’s sovereignty.

China and Vietnam, as well as other neighbouring nations, are locked in long-standing territorial disputes over the South China Sea, including the resources-rich Spratly and Paracel islands.

Xinhua said that the ships left China’s southern island province of Hainan on June 26 and would travel more than 2,400 nautical miles on patrols.

The ships are under the authority of the Chinese government’s State Oceanic Administration and not the country’s navy.

China said on Thursday it would resolutely oppose any military provocation in its territorial waters and protect its sovereignty – remarks which appeared to be directed partly at Vietnam.

China’s military has established routine naval patrols in the South China Sea as a matter of “national sovereignty”, defence ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said.

“The determination and will of China’s military to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity is unwavering,” he said.

China said last month it had elevated the administrative status of what it calls the Nansha (Spratly) and Xisha (Paracel) islands from a county to a prefectural-level district.

China’s state-backed China National Offshore Oil Corp has also called for tenders from foreign companies to explore for oil in the South China Sea near Vietnam, a move Hanoi deemed “illegal”.

Tensions in the South China Sea have risen sharply recently, with China and the Philippines also locked in a maritime dispute over Scarborough Shoal, a reef off the Philippine coast.
