Himpunan Hijau's Wong Tack to contest in Bentong under Pakatan ticket

Himpunan Hijau chairman Wong Tack has declared that he will contest the Bentong parliamentary seat in the 13th general election.

He said that after weeks of intense discussion with the group's committee and with endorsements from leaders of the civil society, he would represent the voice of the people, particularly on green issues.

"The people have struggled for the past two years against Lynas and other hazardous projects. The rakyat have organised protest after protest, submitted memorandums after memorandums and taken actions through legal means.

"However, to our great disappointment, all our voices have fallen on deaf ears of those in power.

"This gives us no choice but to utilise the political platform to remove the current regime in order to make way for Pakatan Rakyat to fulfill its promise to the people when it comes into power," he said in a statement Tuesday.

Wong added that Himpunan Hijau's prime objective was to bring down Lynas and to be a part of the policy-making process in the new government with regards to environmental protection and sustainable development.

"Himpunan Hijau may not have any political experience and resources, but we believe that we have the hearts of the people. We believe in the power of love.

"With that, we will come forward to take this challenge face on. Let us start with Bentong and expand our momentum throughout the nation," he said.

Wong also said he was contesting Bentong as it was the focus point of Himpunan Hijau's Pahang green corridor campaign.

"It is the place where the Pahang Mentri Besar Adnan Yaakob has challenged the people. This sort of arrogance displayed by a leader of a state is totally unacceptable. Therefore, the people will take up this challenge to remind those in power that their power is in the hands of the people," he said.

Wong was referring to Adnan's statement that the next elections would serve as a referendum on the Lynas issue for the people of Kuantan.

Adnan is the Pelangai assemblyman in the Bentong constituency while the incumbent Bentong MP is Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Wong is expected to stand as a candidate under one of the Pakatan component party flags.
