An RM250mil hospital will be built to replace the existing 46-year-old facility here.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who launched the site of the new building, said the 150-bed hospital will be ready by 2016.
“The groundbreaking and earthworks will be done this year. JKR (the Public Works Department) will be calling for tenders. Next year, the infrastructure works should commence,” Liow told reporters after inspecting the 16.19ha site.
The new hospital, sited 6.5km from Tanjung Karang town and 7.5km from Kuala Selangor town, will serve some 200,000 residents in its vicinity.
Liow said the new facility would also be an upgrade a “minor specialist hospital”.
“Cases requiring specialists are now referred to the Sungai Buloh hospital, which is quite a distance away.
“There are eight visiting specialists who come weekly to Tanjung Karang Hospital and when the new building is ready we will station some of these specialists there permanently,” he added.
The number of doctors serving at the hospital will also be increased and housemanship programmes will be introduced, Liow said.
He also announced an allocation of RM500,000 to upgrade and maintain the existing hospital, which will be converted into a haemodialysis centre after the new facility is completed.
The existing hospital, which sits on a 4.45ha site, was launched by the late Sultan of Selangor Sultan Salahuddin Abd Aziz Shah Al-Haj in 1967. It served 114,771 patients last year.
Liow also announced a RM6.5mil grant for the development of a community clinic as well as two more ambulances for the Tanjung Karang hospital.
Accompanying Liow at the launch was Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar, who is Tanjung Karang MP.
