PETALING JAYA: Please do not abandon your babies.
That is the plea from OrphanCARE, an organisation that operates the country’s first baby hatch, to young mothers.
“Your baby’s life is priceless and there are couples waiting to give your baby the love and care that he or she deserves,” said its deputy president Noraini Hashim.
“We have to prevent them from being abandoned in an unsafe environment and also prevent them from dying due to neglect.”
OrphanCARE, whose baby hatch is in Kampung Tunku, plans to open more baby hatches in Kota Baru and Johor Baru by year-end.
The baby hatch also allows mothers to anonymously give up their unwanted babies for adoption.
She added that 2,600 couples were registered with them, waiting for the chance to adopt and out of that 500 had been interviewed.
The organisation also called on the public not to blame and penalise teenage mothers and called for refuge for unwanted babies.
“While OC’s focus is on the well being of the baby, other bodies or NGOs need to come in to educate parents who must realise that we cannot afford to continue with a blinkered approach to pre-marital sex and babies out of wedlock,” said Noraini.
“Malaysians pride themselves as being a moral society. If we recognise that unwanted pregnancies and child abandonment is a real problem in Malaysia, we must offer solutions.”
On the demand for fertility procedures may be rising, there was still couples waiting in line to adopt babies.

Despite the staggering number of hopeful potential parents, only 70 have so far succeeded in adopting babies since the organisation opened the baby hatch here in mid-2009.
