Trailer with contraband goods found out after collision

MALACCA: Contraband worth an estimated RM2mil were discovered following an accident which occurred when a car hit the rear of a trailer and exploded near the Ayer Keroh toll plaza.

The car driver was killed on the spot in the accident at KM149.9 of the North-South Expressway at about 6am yesterday.

He has yet to be identified.

Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Umar Ali Saifuddin Shaharuddin said the trailer was laden with illicit cigarettes and liquor.

The driver fled the scene after the accident.

Supt Umar Ali said preliminary investigations showed that the contraband were meant for shipment to a neighbouring country.

He said police had initiated a probe for reckless driving and for fleeing the scene.

“We've also alerted Customs on the smuggling attempt,” Supt Umar Ali said.

According to Malacca Customs Department director Datuk Mohd Nasir Said, the trailer was carrying contraband worth about RM2mil with an unpaid tax close to RM350,000.

Meanwhile, an officer at the Ayer Keroh Fire and Rescue Department, Hadzar Hasan, said four rescue engines arrived at the scene of the accident at 6.15am.
