KUALA LUMPUR: A study has revealed that eight out of 10 Malaysian children have experienced some form of bullying, either online or physically.
The study, conducted on 7,600 children aged between eight and 17, also revealed that three out of 10 children had been bullied online.
“Children are going online at an increasingly young age,” said Microsoft Malaysia and new markets legal and corporate affairs director Jasmine Begum at a roundtable discussion here yesterday.
The “Global Youth Online Behaviour Survey” by Microsoft, conducted in 25 countries early this year, also revealed that only 30% of Malaysian parents monitored their children’s activities online, compared to the 25-country average of 44%.
Malaysian Psychiatric Association president Dr Abdul Kadir Abu Bakar said incidents of bullying in the country were very much under-reported.
“We have found that many children do not know how to cope with stress or depression and end up taunting or bullying other children,” he said, adding that parents made the situation worse by being in denial and not getting help for their kids.
