KUALA TERENGGANU: A complaint of children playing firecrackers resulted in a huge seizure of contraband items at Kampung Pondok Lalang in Batu Rakit here.
Police went door to door making inquiries about the noise when they stumbled upon the stash worth more than RM17,000 in a house belonging to a hardware store attendant.
Terengganu CID chief Asst Comm K. Manoharan said more than 20 types of firecrackers were discovered in the kitchen, including Dragon Eggs and Thunder Clap.
“We believe the suspect was selling from his home as well as supplying local traders. We are still investigating where he obtained the supply,” he said.
“Any trader who sells firecrackers will have his business licence revoked,” he said.
Meanwhile in Kuantan, Marine police succeeded in thwarting an attempt to smuggle 105 boxes of firecrackers and explosives meant for the Kuantan market during a pre-dawn ambush in Chendor near here.
However, the two smugglers, in their 30s, managed to escape into a secondary forest when police moved in to inspect their vehicle.
Marine police third region commander Asst Comm Azmi Ibrahim said they found the explosives hidden in the boot of a Proton Perdana.
ACP Azmi said the seizure worth more than RM6,000 was the second biggest and the sixth successful raid carried out by marine police this year.
He said on July 25, they managed to arrest a suspect, 24, and seized 56 boxes of firecrackers and explosives near a bus terminal in Kuantan.
