MARANG: A roti canai seller was killed in a drive-by shooting while playing checkers with a friend outside his shophouse.
On Sunday night, three men in a Perodua Viva stopped by the shop at Kampung Bukit Cempedak and asked for Pok Mat.
When Mat Keya Jusoh, 54, fondly known as Pok Mat, identified himself, one of the men fired two shots which hit the victim’s chest. They then fled the scene.
Pok Mat was rushed to the Hulu Terengganu Hospital but died while receiving treatment.
The victim’s wife Sepiah Mamat, 53, was in the kitchen when she heard the shots.
“I thought it was just some children playing firecrackers. I realised something horrible had happened to my husband only when I heard his friend screaming for help,” she said.
Sepiah described her husband as a friendly person whose roti canai was popular among the residents here and that he did not have any enemy.
“Neither was he in debt,” she said between sobs. “In fact, he was known for his hospitality.”
Terengganu CID chief Asst Comm K. Manoharan said police were investigating the motive of the murder.
“We have already launched a manhunt for the three suspects aged between 20 and 25,” he said.
