Two feared drowned in Ranau river

KOTA KINABALU: A three-year-old girl and a man are feared drowned after the four-wheel drive vehicle they were travelling in was swept away in a fast-flowing river in Ranau, about 90km from here.

Seven others in the vehicle managed to swim to safety in the 7pm incident on Saturday.

Until noon yesterday, firemen and villagers were still combing the river, near Kampung Kawiyan, in search of Elsey Charles and Marudin Limboy, 40.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Services public relations officer Mohd Affendi Ramin said they had found the Toyota Land Cruiser but neither the child nor the man.

“Our men, assisted by volunteers, are continuing to search through the river that cuts through remote and hilly terrain,” he said, adding that the area was about 60km from Ranau town and communication was limited.

The ones who managed to escape are Limon, 60; Renimulok, 50; Salmah, 38; Yutin, 46; Justinah, 15; Mencis Limon, 33, and Maichel, 24.

Mohd Affendi said some were related to each other while the others were from the same village.
