5,068 evacuation centres identified for flood victims

The Welfare Department has identified 5,068 evacuation centres which can support up to 1.3 million flood victims from all around the country.

Women, Family and Community Development Ministry secretary-general Datuk Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur said the department had five reserve flood supply depots with enough emergency supplies ready to be distributed to flood victims.

“Our officers have also sent food supplies and emergency necessities to 480 bases at areas with an identified risk of supply and communication cuts,” she said.

Noorul said department personnel at state and district-levels had been ordered to be prepared for emergencies.

Volunteers had been given proper training in activities such as managing evacuation centres, making registrations and cooking.

It was reported that the entire west coast, west Sabah and the interior of Sarawak would experience heavy rain due to inter-monsoon weather.

The northeast monsoon is expected to hit the east coast and several other parts of the country with flooding expected in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Perak, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak between November and March.
