Drunk man jumps off hotel balcony but lands safely

JOHOR BARU: A 21-year-old drunk worker tried to end his life by jumping off the fourth floor balcony of a hotel in Jalan Tebrau here but failed as he landed on an emergency air mattress.

Johor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Hamid Suari said they received a distress call at around 6.30am yesterday and 18 personnel and three fire engines were rushed to the scene.

“When we arrived, we found the victim in a drunk and emotionally unstable condition. He was standing on the ledge of the balcony,” he said.

The commotion attracted a large crowd of onlookers and even prompted some to stop their vehicles to witness the drama.

Hamid said his personnel as well as the man's mother, wife and friend tried to persuade the victim to come down.

“The friend managed to hold on to the victim's arm but he struggled to free himself and jumped off the ledge at around 7am and landed on the inflated emergency air mattress.”

“He did not suffer any injury. He could walk after getting off the mattress,” he said.

The victim, identified as Wong, has been sent to Hospital Sultanah Aminah for treatment.
