Several Malaysians are on the police radar

KUALA LUMPUR: Several more Malaysians, suspected of preparing to join militant groups in countries affected by civil strife and war, like Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Iraq and some Middle East nations, are on the police radar.

Their identities are known to the police, who are in constant contact with their counterparts in those countries.

The two Malaysians recently detained in Lebanon Muhamad Razin Sharhan Mustafa Kamal, 21, and Razif Mohd Ariff, 30 had also been under the surveillance of the police, who knew they had left the country for Turkey on Oct 3.

Police sources said the two took a flight from the KL International Airport to Istanbul and were travelling with valid Malaysian documents.

“We have been monitoring them since early this year after receiving a tip-off,” said a top police source.

Bukit Aman Special Task Force (Operations and Counter Terrorism) director Comm Datuk Fuzi Md Harun said Malaysia hoped to receive details from the Lebanese authorities after they completed their investigations on the two detainees.

“We will send a team to Lebanon if an approval is given by the Lebanese authorities,” he said.
