Key road cut off after partial bridge collapse

A bridge linking Kampung Pulau Meranti to Putrajaya and Puchong has partially collapsed, cutting off a key access road for thousands of residents in the area.

Part of the bridge, located near Masjid Meranti, collapsed at about 2pm yesterday, leaving a hole estimated to be around 3.5m wide and 3m deep.

There were no casualties reported.

A villager, who asked to be identified only as Hafiz, claimed that he felt as if his car was being swung about while driving across the bridge about 30 minutes before the collapse.

“I quickly went to inform the village chief but not long after that the bridge collapsed,” he told reporters at the scene.

Hafiz, who said he used the bridge regularly, claimed that there had been numerous complaints to the village chief about tell-tale cracks and small holes found along the bridge as far back as six months ago.

Another villager, Saiful Wan Mohd Rosli, 40, said they were lucky that nobody was using the bridge when it caved in.

“This road is quite busy because it links us to Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and Puchong. Buses also use this route,” he said, adding that many motorists use the route to avoid paying the highway toll.
