Braveheart cop shot in the chest

KOTA BARU: He was on the lookout for two armed robbery suspects. Upon spotting them trying to escape a roadblock, he gave chase.

Lans-Kpl Mohd Shamsul Anuar Mohd Adnan, 27, was then shot in the chest. But he did not let the gunshot wound stop him and continued to try to apprehend them until he lost consciousness.

He is now warded at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II hospital here and is scheduled to undergo surgery.

In Monday's 1am incident, Kpl Shamsul Anuar, from Paloh police station, was manning a roadblock with five other personnel following a report that a businessman's house had been broken into in Taman Tropika, Gua Musang.

Two individuals, suspected of stealing a BMW and a Honda Accord, made a U-turn when they approached the roadblock.

Kpl Shamsul Anuar, who felt something amiss, gave chase on his motorcycle and managed to catch up with the suspects after the driver lost control of the BMW and landed in a ditch. The suspect in the car then opened fire, hitting the policeman in the chest.

Both suspects managed to flee into a nearby oil palm plantation.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, who visited Kpl Shamsul Anuar at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital here, said police had cordoned off the area to track down the suspects.

“We have deployed the General Operation Force to comb the area to ensure that they cannot escape,” he said, adding that money and valuables were recovered from the cars.

Khalid commended Kpl Shamsul Anuar for his bravery in trying to apprehend the suspects despite being shot.

Khalid said he had been told by doctors that Kpl Shamsul Anuar's lungs collapsed due to the gunshot.
