Perlis Raja Muda: No polystyrene items at functions

KANGAR: Perlis Raja Muda Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail does not want polystyrene food and drink containers to be used at his functions anymore, as such items can be hazardous to health.

He also hopes that government departments and agencies, higher learning institutions and schools will also stop using such products.

Speaking at the launching of a health awareness campaign in conjunction with a breaking of fast function and Tarawih prayers at Istana Arau last night, the Raja Muda suggested that biodegradable plastic items and easily disposable paper wrappers be used instead.

"Developed countries don't use polystyrene but paper products like food wrappers instead," he said.

Studies have shown the styrene and benzene found in polystyrene products have ill-effects on the nervous system and environment.

Also present at the function were the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah, State Secretary Datuk Azizan Hamid and Perlis police chief, SAC Zull Aznam Haron. - Bernama
