Suspect in fatal snatch theft case nabbed

GEORGE TOWN: Police have nabbed a lorry driver believed to be involved in the snatch theft case which claimed the life of senior citizen Tan Kim Chuan at the Rifle Range flats here early this month.

The suspect, 50, was spotted behaving suspiciously at a nearby cemetery at about 5.30pm on Monday.

The man tried to flee and ran several kilometres before the police caught him.

Tan, 60, was walking alone near Block J of the flats when her handbag was snatched by a motorcyclist at about 6.02am on July 10.

She fell and died several hours later from head injuries.

Initial investigation found that the suspect, who has three previous criminal records, was also involved in another snatch theft incident in the area on May 2.

“We were able to arrest him, thanks to our intelligence and a tip-off from the public,” state deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Jaafar told a press conference at the state police headquarters here yesterday.

He hoped the man would shed some light on Tan's death and that other snatch theft victims would come forward to help identify the suspect, who has been remanded for four days.

Meanwhile, police are looking for mechanic Mohd Zainal Zulkifli, 28, to help in the assault and robbery case involving the mother of Balik Pulau MP Yusmadi Yusof on July 11.

In that incident, 73-year-old Fatimah Ahmad lost RM33,000 worth of valuables and sustained a bruised left eye after she was punched by the thief.

SAC Abdul Rahim said the suspect, whose last known address is 527 MK D, Jalan Baru, Balik Pulau, had a previous criminal record for robbery.
