Armed suspect surrenders himself after three-hour drama at hair salon

KUALA KRAI: A man armed with a fake pistol and knife held five hair salon workers and a customer hostage for three hours in a hair salon here.

The 27-year-old unemployed graphic designer gave himself up after the police managed him to coax him into surrendering during the hostage drama which occurred at about 2.30pm yesterday and witnessed by hundreds of onlookers.

Kelantan CID chief ACP Lai Yong Heng said the suspect attempted to rob the five workers and a customer in the premises.

“The police managed to talk the suspect into surrendering and arrested him at about 5.30pm.

“The suspect has no previous criminal record. However, the suspect will be investigated under Section 393 and 342 of the Penal Code for using a sharp object and a fake pistol to commit robbery,” he said.

Upon entering the salon, the suspect grabbed one of the female workers and demanded that the other workers open the safe deposit box.

The workers were Siti Roskasma Rozali, 18, Nadzirah Isa, 18, Nur Nadia Najwa Zainuddin, 18, Mohd Zafri Mat Hussin, 24 and Nur Shuhadah Mohd Rozali, 21.

Mohd Zafri said he was coming out of the toilet when he saw the suspect pointing a pistol at the neck of one of his colleagues.

“I walked back into the toilet and called the police. Then I stayed there for more than three hours because I was afraid that the suspect would shoot me,” he said at the district hospital here.

Siti Roskasma said the suspect first grabbed Nadzirah when he entered the salon.

“He forced me to open the safe deposit box while pointing the pistol at her. I told him that my boss was away and we could not open it.

“After an hour, Nadzirah fainted. He then grabbed me,” she said.
