Community Emergency Response Team for Kelana Jaya

THE Kelana Jaya parliamentary coordinator’s office will help set up a Community Emergency Response team in view of the increasing number of crime and emergencies occurring in the constituency.

Kelana Jaya parliamentary coordinator Ong Chong Swen decided to set up the team after meeting with Selangor Community Policing Association president Kuan Chee Heng.

Kelana Jaya MCA deputy youth chief Chen Siang Hooi has been appointed as chief coordinator of the Kelana Jaya 1Malaysia Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Ong said curbing crime was everyone’s responsibility.

“Malaysia has a population of 28 million people. The estimated criminal population is around 100,000, with hardcore criminals numbering around 30,000,” she said.

“We should not allow these 30,000 hardcore criminals to disrupt the quality of life of the 28 million. Although we should not take the law into our own hands, we should also not allow criminals to create problems and move around freely.”

Ong said it was not easy for civilians to deal with emergencies.

“While we can depend on the police personnel to protect us through enforcement, the ratio of the police officers and the areas they cover is just too big,” she said.

“Thus they may not be able to arrive at the place of need in time.”

With CERT, Ong said members would not only be trained to help themselves but also learn how to handle emergency situations such as fire, flood, stalled cars, traffic chaos and snatch theft.

Ong noted that many have responded positively after learning about the intention to form the team.

Those who are interested in serving the community can contact the Kelana Jaya parliamentary coordinator before Nov 15.

The office is located at 39-2, Jalan USJ1/1A, Regalia Business Centre, Subang Jaya.
